Perma-Columns are precision-machined, robotically welded, specially coated and lifetime guaranteed. 1/4 inch thick corrosion-resistant HSLA (high-strength, low-alloy) steel is protected by a 4 stage phospate wash/conversion to pre-treat steel, followed by an epoxy-resin and high-solids resin powder coating. The process, called EpoxyZirc Coating, far outlasts ZMAX and ASTM A653 or G185 and similar hot-dipped, electro-plated and powdercoated systems.
In ASTM B-117 Salt Spray Tests, time to significant red rust results were:
Retail Rust Inhibiting Spray Enamel - 60-100 hours
Standard Powder Coat* - 100-200 hours
ZMAX** - 250-450 hours
Perma-Column EpoxyZirc - 1,500-1,680 hours
* Standard Powder Coating is a Phosphate pre-treatment with a high-solids polyester resin powder coating.
**ZMAX is a Galvanized finish available for most Simpson Strongtie connectors, which is a thicker than the coating prescribed by ASTM A653
